Zygnema – Born of Unity (2010)

My first taste of Zygnema was at Hammerfest held over a month ago, not live, but after buying their CD and listening at home. Knowing nothing about the band except for the fact that they play groove metal I began listening without any pessimism.
The intro Phobia has something to do with the Mumbai terrorist attacks (forgive me,I don’t understand hindi very well). The production seems quite kickass in the album, drums tones extremely smooth accentuating Mayank Sharma’s impeccable skills. I initially was sceptical about the album, as I expected to find the Core element in it but realised Zygnema somehow aren’t any bigger fans of Core than I am. I did find some good thrash metal riffs in some songs. The vocals are quite awesome, production wise and even otherwise. Goes very well the total feel of the song.
Being a one guitarist band has always been a gamble, the band is definitely gonna sound like how the guitarist would sound alone. And he’s got to be powerful enough, and must take centre stage in every song, delivering both riffs and solos himself. I somehow feel Siddarth doesn’t seem to be able to do it. Playing what they play, there aren’t really stand-out catchy riffs. And soloing is absent in most songs, like Machine State Hibernation which is purely a rhythm based song, but not a very great song when it comes to rhythm guitar. The groovy riffs come only in Discriminate, giving you quite a sense of relief. Or more of an idea as to what sound to expect from the forthcoming songs on the album. There are parts where a certain Pantera influence is clearly noticeable, both on guitars and vocals. National Disaster is somewhat a patriotic track, lyrically. The only track with a legitimate solo, a very mediocre one at that.
The last track, the title track isn’t a very great closing song, definitely not one that leaves you wanting for more. The album is surely not one that makes a mark, in your head or anywhere else. Mayank Sharma’s drumming is the saving grace on many a song, and definitely makes up for Siddarth’s lacklustre guitaring. Also wanna say that the absence of the Core element makes it worth a listen or two. I feel these guys could do with another guitarist, at least sound more powerful, bearing in mind the lyrics that they write and the feel they wanna create.
Dude, I think it's a very poor review of the Zygnema album by you. It's a very personal opinion of yours with which anyone, who has ever seen/heard Zygnema play would totally disagree!!! You need to watch the band live and see how amazing they sound and what kinda crowd puller the band really is. I suggest you come watch them live this Sunday @ Bajaoo69 and I am certain you will realize how wrong you are about this whole review of yours.
Dude this is not based on their live performance,this is purely based on what I've heard on their CD. And I am sure the music will not change when you watch them live,just that they are really good onstage,which is what I've heard a lot and believe too. Making an impact live is awesome man,but doing the same on record is not that easy. and I honestly don't think the guitars,being a single guitarist,are any special at all,especially since they're thrash/groove metal where the riffs do all the talking.

Zygnema live is an experience itself and they are fantastic.
Sadly this is not the case with the album. The songs themselves and the production leave much to be desired.
I do know once these guys get their 'sound' together and break away a bit from the cliche they will produce a much better album.

I thought the review was spot on. Zygnema are a very mediocre thrash band (and thrash is a very loose term for them) and even after watching them live I was unimpressed. They are energetic but that's about it. The songs are bland with atrocious vocals. Maybe this is the sort of music that all you thrash noobs love but at the end of the day it's nothing more than another overly hyped band/album.
And in case you didn't notice the review was for their ALBUM not their live act.

look guys i am not screaming out saying that it's the greatest album ever made!! but personally to me…i think it's total paisa vasool…of course like u said the sound will improve….it's just their 1st album…also i am aware that the review is for the album and not the live performance…but when u r giving ur opinion may be u do consider the whole package the band provides….well i ain't a professional critc or summat…but anyway, to each his own….i love their music and would continue to listen to it. period.
Zygnema live is extremely well done. No questions there..
The album is a very good effort too (a tiny bit of feeling "could have been better")…

And the guitar work IS lacklustre. Everyone calls them thrash but this is more modern metal than thrash. In fact that seems to be the trend now. Calling rubbish like Chimaera, LOG, Devil Driver etc thrash. If anything this album is a 3rd rate Pantera derived mash up.
BUT I've seen them live and they do have potential. Depends on whether they'll stick together to realise it.
^^ This kind of screwed up, unsupportive attitude is what is whats delaying indian metal scene from getting the limelight.
Damn man, you can't appreciate a band, atleast don't discourage… as far as 'should admire barking and grunting tunelessly' goes… I would like to see how your vocals go.
Don't judge/question/criticise skills, if you cannot match up.
If its a matter of your preference, you should rather refrain from making unjustified comments on skills, its discouraging to the musicians, who do it on professional fronts.

although i usually do not agree with morphus on a lot of counts, what he's saying is right. to an extent. if the band is bad, then the band is bad. this whole 'because you don't support the indian music scene, you're the root cause for its decline' is bullshit. if we promote aforementioned sucky bands despite knowing that they are sucky, we're going to be in for a disappointment down the line.
i don't really see the point of supporting/promoting the band if they aren't good. take demonic resurrection for example. although they're a huge band now, i still don't like the music. but hey, thats just me. sahil can either weep about my opinion and ignore it and continue growing stronger. and i doubt its the former.

Agree with Morpheus, Zygnema are not Thrash,well if anything they can be described as Thrash/Groove,metal is something that's continually evolving and given the day and age one cannot stick to one particular genre or sub genre. Having said that it would be stupid to label yourself a particular genre when you're influenced by a whole bunch,labelling yourself means sticking to it,which when not done,leads to stupidity.
Zygnema is not Thrash,I will tell you that much. And Swizz,listen to Sledge,now that's Thrash and that's how riffs are written,truly awesome,I'm not saying Siddarth is bad,I'm just saying he needs to get better to please a Thrash fan's ears,as a rhythmist and a soloist.

If anything people like YOU and those other duffers Rob and Suraj are the ones 'delaying' the Indian metal scene. It's because you people praise even mediocre efforts that bands get complacent and say to themselves that they're already great and don't try and improve. THAT's the main problem with the scene.
I've seen it happen at many competitions as well. A thoroughly average band wins and all their friends say they're the best thing since sliced bread. Next thing you know that band ends up with a 'we're so cool' attitude and release a crap album where the same lousy friends/well wishers heap the same useless praises on them. And the circle continues year after year.
Mac n Cheese is certainly right. And using DR is a great example. I'm not really a fan of their music and I've actually ripped them apart on various forums and message boards BUT what I admire about them is that instead of letting the negative criticism bother them they actually try to get better, like they have with their new album. THAT is why they will go far, whether I like their music or not.
